Very secretive P5 bloc at large, conflicting with information hungry non-permanent members. P5 scurried along during informal informal session, clearly working together, only to repeatedly refuse to even utter a quip during the formal informal session as to just what they spoke about. Not an informed word has been spoken yet on the matter, and this was half an hour ago.
Q&A starts with the delegation of Iraq. They do call for military equipment, stating their army will use it against the threat of IS. One can wonder however, seeing the late displays of Iraqi army morale and organization, whether this would truly be an effective measure to stop the march of IS, rather than indirectly giving them to IS by laying down their arms, as stated by the Chilean delegation.
A delegation from the Syrian government is invited into a Q&A session in the Security Council. Their final statement in the opening speech reads “any intervention will be viewed as an act of aggression”. In the same breath the Syrian government calls for military resources so as to be able to tackle the threat of IS.
Surprisingly enough very few delegations seem to question the reliability of their statements, intentions or means of warfare in the last number of years. The Australian delegation posits stationing a UN peacekeeping force so as to “restrict movement in the region”. Is it regional-wide martial law that he intends? The Syrian delegation: “we do not negotiate with terrorists, maybe the delegation from the USA recognizes this logic?” Breaking: The Syrian delegation acknowledges the conflict is a “civil war”. Lithunia speaks of the “terror of the Russian military breathing down our necks”, yet points out the notion of Russian economic dependence of natural gas sales to the EU. The president of the European Commission however speaks a softening word so as not to overly upset relations with the Russian Federation.
The president of the European Commission motions for a high level debate on solidarity mechanisms of the gas-energy network, positing the idea of acting as a single buyer. The motion was shortly given priority by the council and approved in unison.
